Fort Lauderdale Hollywood airport, located 21 miles north of Miami, is often used as an alternative airport for that city. Although Miami airport handles most of the long-haul flights, Fort Lauderdale has become a significant intercontinental gateway. Located 3 miles southwest of the city of Fort Lauderdale and near the cruise terminals at Port Everglades, it’s an important gateway for Florida sun-worshippers and those heading to the Caribbean on business or vacation.
Getting around: The airport is comprised of four main terminals, with terminals 1 – 3 serving domestic airlines only and terminal 4, serving both domestic and international carriers. Complimentary shuttles run between all of the terminals. Although not typically a connector airport, it can take a while to transfer between terminals.
Unless you’re flying in and transferring directly to a cruise ship, it’s likely that you’ll want to rent a car upon arrival. There is a complimentary shuttle from terminals 2-4 to the Rental Car Center and you can walk from terminal 1 (although if you’re in concourse C the walk is a fair distance).
A cab to Port Everglades will cost you $17 and to Port Miami $76.
Dining: Dining options throughout the airport tend to lean toward food court fare. The Food Network has upped the ante by opening a restaurant in Terminal 3 (post security). Open since November 2012, the menu offers organic and sustainable ingredients. Dishes reflect local influences, such as local seafood, key lime and dishes with Cuban/Latin influences. One of the highlights of terminal 2 is the Cruzan Estate Bar and Lounge, where you’ll find the famous Cruzan Island frozen drinks and cocktails made with Cruzan rum.
Relaxation: If you have time to spare at the airport enjoy the 40 pieces of art throughout the terminals or enjoy the wide variety of music showcased by FLL’s Terminal Tunes. Leaving from Terminal 3? There’s a sunny view sitting area with benches and picnic tables where you can enjoy the beautiful Florida sunshine.
Wi-Fi: Free wireless internet access is offered in all terminals, concourses and the Rental Car Center.
